This unique gift jar comes filled with a variety of unpolished small & medium sized Petoskey stones.  Just add water to reveal the true beauty of these stones! The jar has a nice silicone seal and is about 3 1/2 inches tall. The stones were collected from East Grand Traverse Bay in beautiful Northern Michigan.

Petoskey stone is a rock, often pebble-shaped, that is composed of a fossilized coral.  These stones were formed as a result of glaciation, where sheets of ice plucked stones from the bedrock, grinding off their rough edges and depositing them in the northwestern (and some in the northeastern) portion of Michigan’s lower peninsula. It is the official state stone of Michigan.

Petoskey stones can be found on various beaches and inland locations in Michigan, with many of the most popular Petoskey stone beaches stretching from Traverse City to Petoskey, along Lake Michigan. They are fragments of a coral reef that was originally deposited during the Devonian period. When dry, the stone resembles ordinary limestone but when wet or polished, the distinctive mottled pattern of the six-sided coral fossils emerges.

The stone was named for an Ottawa chief, Chief Pet-O-Sega.  The city of Petoskey, Michigan is also named after him, and is the center of the area where the stones are found.

The movement of the frozen lake ice acting on the shore during the winters is thought to turn over stones at the shore of Lake Michigan, exposing new Petoskey stones at the water's edge each spring.

Care Instructions

Please follow these suggestions for care of your handmade jewelry:

Don’t wear your jewelry while sleeping, swimming, exercising, or handle it roughly

Don’t expose your jewelry to extreme hot/cold temperatures, or prolonged direct sun exposure

Don’t clean your jewelry with any chemicals or jewelry cleaning machines.  A simple cleaning with soap and lukewarm water and soft cloth is all that should be required.

It is natural for pure copper jewelry to get darker/oxidize over time.  We will provide you with a small cleaning cloth with your purchase to help keep it shiny and clean, but we do recommend that you store your copper jewelry in a sealed plastic bag to help slow the oxidation process.
